For all those with an interest in the volunteer movement and the territorial force in the north west of England, there's a new book available, Volunteer Infantry of Ashton under Lyne by Robert Bonner

It covers the period 1859 to 1971, starting with the origins of the volunteer movement in Ashton, the volunteer battalions in the Boer War, and more importantly for this forum, the 9th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment with the East Lancashire Brigade in the Great War, where it covers the 9th battalion's actions in Gallipoli and the Western Front, plus a short history of the 2/9th and 3/9th

The book has biographical notes on some of the officers and men from the 3rd Volunteer Battalion and the 9th Battalion and includes a superb biography of William Thomas Forshaw VC

Also included in the book are :-

Rolls of volunteers who served in South Africa

Officer lists from March 1880, April 1909, December 1915, April 1917, January 1936/7, May 1940, June 1950 & October 1957

Honours and Awards for WW1 and WW2

Rolls of Honour for WW1 and WW2

I've enjoyed reading it and will no doubt find it useful in the future

The book is available from the Museum of the Manchester Regiment Mancs Museum

Captain Bonner is the author and editor of several books on the Manchester Regiment
