Hi, my name is Grant and im looking for any information on 1/8th Bn Durham Light Infantry between 1914-18, as my Great Uncle was Killed serving with them out in France during the battle for the Somme, his name was Private William Robson army No 2494. Any information on how or what killed him would be greatly appreciated.

Also my great grandad was serving with 19th (Service) Bn the Northumbeland Fusiliers 1914-18.His name was Private Fred Donkin army No 19/964. I no from my grandma he was wounded in the leg and refussed to let the sergeon amputee it, he later went on to make a full recovery. Any information on him or his Battalion would mean a great deal, thank you for your time.

Grant,

"Soldiers Died" reveals that William Robson was killed in action on 18 September 1916. He was born at Birtley.

It's most unlikely that his demise was recorded in the battalion's war diary. However, the good news is that I've done a fair bit of research on all DLI battalion, and I hope you find the attachment an enjoyable and interesting read. There's nothing specific about events on 18 September but there's a reference to the area in which the battalion operated at the time.
