Guest Lawrence Wells Posted 9 December , 2002 Share Posted 9 December , 2002 Have a photograph of a British WW1 soldier wearing Sergeants stripes both upper arms, what looks like a fusiliers grenade above, then Kings Crown above that. Could anybody tell me his rank ? Cheers, Laurie.
Greenwoodman Posted 9 December , 2002 Share Posted 9 December , 2002 Suggestion only - an RE Staff Sergeant.
munce Posted 9 December , 2002 Share Posted 9 December , 2002 The grenade probably represents either the Royal Engineers or a Guards regiment, and the crown above three stripes is the insignia of a Company Sergeant Major (this from Bull's book on WW1 British Army uniforms). The only question is whether or not guards regiments had a slightly different rank system at this level of NCO rank. I can't honestly remember if they did or not, but no doubt someone else more knowledgable will be able to tell you.
