Guest D Choulerton Posted 9 January , 2006 Share Posted 9 January , 2006 Hi, I am looking for more details about my Grandfather (Arthur ?) Choulerton (I cannot remember his first name). He was a professional soldier and in India before WW1 ( I have a photo of him at an Christmas dinner whilst stationed there) he lived in Sunderland before the war so I assume he was stationed there. I think my Dad told me he was at The Somme and also that he was a Company Seargent Major. Any info or useful suggestions about how to find out more would be appreciated. Cheers D
Stebie9173 Posted 9 January , 2006 Share Posted 9 January , 2006 Try these Medal Index Cards: Medal card of Chouleton, Arthur Corps Regiment No Rank 1st Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment 11568 Private Labour Corps 442824 Private http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...1&resultcount=2 Medal card of Choulerion, Arthur Corps Regiment No Rank Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment 11568 Private Labour Corps 442824 Private http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...1&resultcount=2 They should give you extra information, though they may say the same thing. Each costs £3.50 to download from the National Archives. I shall move over and let the Sherwood Foresters people in. There seem to be an awful lot of Foresters round here lately! Steve. Stebie9173 Posted 9 January , 2006 Share Posted 9 January , 2006 (edited) Information from the 1901 Census: Address: 5 Burgess (possibly Burgass) Terrace, Nottingham. Edward Goodrich, born abt 1870, Nottingham, Head, Furnaceman in Foundry. Eliza Goodrich, born abt 1872, Nottingham, Wife Arthur Choulerton, born abt 1890, Nottingham, Nephew Edward Choulerton, born abt 1896, Nottingham, Nephew Ernest Choulerton, born abt 1894 Nottingham, Nephew John Choulerton, born abt 1870, Nottingham, Brother-in-law, Frame work knitter (One would assume that Eliza's maiden name was Choulerton?) Arthur Choulerton's birth was recorded in the December Quarter of 1889 in Nottingham. Volume Ref. 7b, Page 363. Looking back to the 1891 Census we find his birth family: Address : 12 Woburn Street John Choulerton, abt 1869, Nottingham, Head, Frame work knitter Elizabeth Choulerton, abt 1871, Nottingham, Wife, Box maker. Arthur Choulerton, abt 1889 Nottingham, Son Elizabeth died in the early part of 1898 age 26 (March Quarter , Vol. 7b, Pg 234) It is possible that by 1901 the father and children were living with the children's aunt and uncle after Elizabeth's early death. Living in the same street at Number 8 were: Choulerton, Joseph abt 1841 Nottinghamshire, Head Choulerton, Emma abt 1845 Nottinghamshire, Wife Choulerton, Harriett abt 1867 Nottinghamshire, Daughter Choulerton, Eliza abt 1872 Nottinghamshire, Daughter Choulerton, Edward abt 1879 Nottinghamshire, Son I would hazard that John Choulerton and Eliza Goodrich were brother and sister and that Joseph and Emma were Arthur's Grandfather and Grandmother (Your great-great-grandparents) To 1881 Census: Address : 8 Woburn Street Joseph Cholerton abt 1841 Nottingham, Head, Cordwainer Emma Cholerton abt 1843 Nottingham, Wife Harriet Cholerton abt 1867 Nottingham, Daughter, Silk spinner John Cholerton abt 1870 Nottingham, Son Eliza Cholerton abt 1872 Nottingham, Daughter Edward Cholerton abt 1879 Nottingham, Son Which seems to confirm that they were brother and sister. Andrew Hesketh Posted 9 January , 2006 Share Posted 9 January , 2006 Welcome to the forum D. The 1st battalion was in India prior to the war so Steve's suggestions make perfect sense. Why / when he was transferred to the Labour Corps is anyone's guess though it was often because the individual in question was no longer deemed fit for the fighting battalions (not that Labour Corps men never fought - it's just that fighting was not their primary purpose). Maybe he had been wounded at some point. As he survived the war you need to check if his service records survive for further details. Further information on how to go about this are on the mother site and you'll find more information about the 1st Sherwoods there as well. There will be some useful info on the medal cards picked out by Steve and don't feel hesitant about asking questions about what's on them if you take a look. As Steve says there seems to be an awful lot of Sherwood activity going on at the moment so maybe one of the other pals can offer further clues / ideas. Good luck. Guest D Choulerton Posted 10 January , 2006 Share Posted 10 January , 2006 Thanks for the replies, this is a really good start. Pleased to see I had got his forename right. He was definitely injured and eventually (from what my father told me) died in about 1931of complications from being gassed presumably lung damage. I think he also had an injured leg. I knew that the Choulerton family where involve in the lace and knitting industry. Choulerton is a French Huguenot name and as far as I know Hugenots brought the lace industry to Nottingham. What spurred me on to start trying to find out more about my Grandfather was when I was visitings some friends in Lower Pilsley south of Chesterfield the other week and one of them pointed out a monument we could see on a hill near by and they told me it was a Sherwood Foresters memorial. Any other info is very welcome Cheers D
