Guest granty Posted 9 January , 2006 Share Posted 9 January , 2006 Hi, Just wondering if the regimental numbers given to soldiers tell you which battalion of the regiment they were originally listed in? Does S/26499 Cameron Highlanders tell me which battalion the soldier served with? Thanks Grant
gnr.ktrha Posted 9 January , 2006 Share Posted 9 January , 2006 Hello, The S prefix when given to a soldier in a Highland Regiment, seems to indicate a War Time Volunteer, who has not joined a Regular or Territorial unit. The majority were used to raise the Service Battalions of regiments. However, you will see men with this S prefix in regular Battalions who have been sent out as replacements, I believe. The S does not relate to a battalion. Some of the Scottish regimental Museums have lists of these men. Have you tried the Camerons ? The Address is- The Archivist, Cameron Barraks, Inverness, Scotland. Regards, Stewart
