Keith Kendall Posted 7 January , 2006 Share Posted 7 January , 2006 I have just uncovered another of my family who served Pte 8176 John Taylor 1st Bn Essex Regiment. I know from his MIC that he landed at Gallipoli on 25th April 1945. He survived the war so was persumably with them to the end. Can anyone shed any light on where they would have been after Gallipoli. Thanks Keith
gericht 1914 Posted 7 January , 2006 Share Posted 7 January , 2006 After Gallipoli they went to Egypt (13th january 1916) and arrived in France on 20th march 1916. From August 1919 to October 1922 they served in Ireland. Dave.
Blackblue Posted 8 January , 2006 Share Posted 8 January , 2006 Keith, Have a look at the Long Long Trail: http://www.1914-1918.net/essex.htm They were originally in the 29th Division, which was mainly formed from regular battalions abroad at the time the war commenced. 1 Essex had a very busy Gallipoli campaign, first landing at W Beach and attacking Krithia. They were one of the last units to leave on 8 January 1916. The also served on the Somme, attacking Beaumont Hamel on 1 July 1916. The war diary for July 1916 may be found at the above link. By following the links you can gain some appreciation of their other actions by looking at the battles the 29th Division (pre February 1918) and the 37th Division (post February 1918).
