HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 7 January , 2006 Share Posted 7 January , 2006 (edited) His East Lancs Number is a TF Number so he will be either 4th or 5th Battalion{1/4th;2/4th;3/4th;1/5th;2/5th;3/5th}. Numbers changed in WW1 when the unit changed, there was no retention of Service Number throughout service as from the 1920s through WW2. Graham Stewart Posted 7 January , 2006 Share Posted 7 January , 2006 (edited) Hector, Archibald Pollards number 240860 in the East Lancs Regiment actually links him to the either the 1/5th or 2/5th Battalions and not the 1/4th or 2/4th who were issued with a different series of numbers in 1917. The East Lancs numbers for 1917 were;- 4th Bn, East Lancs new numbers 200001 - 240000. 5th Bn, East Lancs new numbers 240001 - 265000. 33rd Labour Company, Labour Corps was one of many such units formed in February 1917 and it was originally the 2nd Infantry Labour Company, Durham Light Infantry before being redesignated a Labour Corps unit. Hector Posted 8 January , 2006 Author Share Posted 8 January , 2006 With a move to the Labour Corps , would he have been unfit to carry on as an Infantryman after being wounded (he was awarded a swb. He was a railway shunter in 1901census.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 8 January , 2006 Share Posted 8 January , 2006 Probably, transfers to the Labour Corps were usually consequential on being downgraded from fitness for Frontline Service,as a result of Wounds/Sickness,many were subsequently discharged due to their deteriorating Condition
