ttd0 Posted 28 August , 2003 Posted 28 August , 2003 I visited the small village of Bulkington near Devises yesterday. Suprised to see that my great-uncle does not appear on the memorial despite CWGC info showing he was from Bulkington and the 1901 census showing him living there as a child. Bulkington only has about 10 houses and a church and as my uncle was from a very large family who all lived in Bulkington it is strange that he is not on the memorial. 7972 Herbert Wiltshire 2.Wilts KIA 8/07/1916 Somme. Have written a letter to the parish council to enquire.
Terry Denham Posted 28 August , 2003 Posted 28 August , 2003 This is not at all unusual. Missing names abound all over the country. Local memorials were erected by unofficial ad hoc committees made up of local worthies in the main who had their own rules about how they collected the names and who qualified. Most were erected before the official CWGC lists were available or anywhere near complete. My own local memorial was erected before the end of the war death cut-off date of 31.08.21! You will find several threads on the subject on the Forum including one debating the rights and wrongs of adding (or not) missing names.
