Hi

Can anyone help please?

My grandfather HA Beaman was in the AVC 1917-1920, then joined the Essex Regiment. His medal card includes the General Service Medal (GSM) with Iraq Clasp from his time in the AVC. By the time he was given the medal he must have been in the Essex Regiment as the GSM entry is as follows:

Medal. Roll. Page.

GSMed GSM/Essex R/1 7

I attach Adobe version of the card (his is at the top right). In particular, can anyone tell me what the /1 means? does this mean the 1st Battalion? This is important as I need to find out if he served in Ireland with the 1st battalion in 1921 (his army record contains no reference but family history states he did serve in Ireland...).

Also, anyone know what 'page 7' actually means? Would there be any further info here?

Can anyone read what's in the 'Remarks' section?!

Lastly, I do not understand what the entry in 'Theatre of War Served in' means...

Any help appreciated, many thanks, Jon

Your Adobe didnt attach,however with regard to some of your queries:

1}Theatre First Served In:~ Is just that; if a date & Code[1,2,etc] is entered then that will let you know where the Man first Served[1 is France & Flanders]& when he embarked or arrived{this varies on the entrant some put date left UK others Date Arrived @ Destination]If however it is left blank it just means that the Clerks responsible didnt enter the details{usually on BWM/Victory Pairs there is no date entered}

2}Page 7 would refer to the Medal Roll page for the GSM in the Roll Book,There are codes {probably in the Remarks section that refer to the Medal Roll Pages for the Medals issued these Rolls are @ the NA but not available on line.{I would suggest you refer to the Long Long Trail @ the head of the Forum then go to Researching Soldiers Section where MiCs are clearly explained in some detail.

3}Battalion:~ If the Battalion is noted on the MiC then it will usually be prefixing the Name of the Regiment,eg:~ 1/Royal Irish Fus.{The Roll Pages often give Battalion Numbers}

Many thanks for your reply. I'll try to attach medal card again to this reply as the theatre served in part is confusing as is the remarks section.

Best regards, Jon.post-10065-1136635678.jpg
