bcerha Posted 6 January , 2006 Share Posted 6 January , 2006 (edited) Can anyone tell me (and I expect Dick Flory can!) which RHA batterys were involved on the Somme on 1st July 1916? I believe by that stage that all RHA batterys less for the 6 still supporting 1st and 3rd Cavalry Divisions had also traded in their 13pdrs for 18pdrs - is this correct? Grateful for any assistance on this one. Regards David Edited 6 January , 2006 by bcerha
Paul Reed Posted 6 January , 2006 Share Posted 6 January , 2006 L Battery was in action as part of 29th Division on the Beaumont-Hamel front. I know for sure they were still using 13-pounders. Some RHA units formerly of the Indian Corps were attached to the Canadian Corps for the attack on Courcelette; they too were using 13 pounders, and I have found many of the shrapnel casings here over the years. bcerha Posted 7 January , 2006 Author Share Posted 7 January , 2006 Thanks very much for that Paul. Farndales History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery - Western Front 1914-18 lists G,N,O & Z batterys as being equipped with 18pdrs and part of 4th Army but this is as at 11.11.18. I cannot seem to find out whether this conversion and attachment was extant 2 years previously. David
