staffsreg Posted 5 January , 2006 Share Posted 5 January , 2006 (edited) After recently being made aware of the passing of another warrior, Prof.Harold Lawton born in Stoke on Trent, it was sad to have a reminder of the class system which thrived at that time. Harold Lawton was born in 1899,in Burslem and his father owned a tile/mosaics business. Having moved to Rhyl and entering Rhyl Grammar School he enrolled in the school officer training corp. Upon his conscription in 1917 he fully expected to receive a commission, but because his father had fallen upon hard times and could not afford to buy him his uniform/accessories he was forced to join the Royal Welch Fusiliers as a private! I am happy to say he enjoyed a long and fruitful life, but this absolutely amazes me, they should choose not to make use of his training and leadership qualities because of financial constraints. Very sad. Edited 5 January , 2006 by ivan walchester
