I am pretty sure that 78 Field Coy RE served on the Western Front 1915/18 but would appreciate any detailed advice, does anybody know where they were at any specific stage ? or does anybody have any detail on the unit and its movements.

Happy New Year to all :)

For a detailed record of where they were you will probably need to consult the War Diary at the National Archives.

In general terms they were attached to 17th Division.

The company was raised in about September 1914, as one of the three Divisional Engineer Companies of 17th (Northern) Division, as mentioned above.

The division embarked at Southampton for France on the 12th July 1916 and finished its concentration South of St Omer on 17th July and two days later moved to joined 5th Corps, south-west of Ypres. It was engaged in the attack on Hooge on the 9th August 1915.

It was involved in the loss and recapture of The Bluff on theYpres-Comines canal in February and March 1916, and the was involved in the Somme offensive including the battle for Delville Wood between 1-12 August 1916.

The following year it was engaged at Arras at the 1st and 2nd Battles of the Scarpe and also the capture and defence of Rouex. In October - November it found itself back in the Ypres Salient again in the 1st and 2nd Battles of Passchendaele.

Between 21 March and 5th April 1918, it saw action during the German offensive at Bapaume and St Quentin. It returned to the Bapaume area between 31 August and 3rd September, seeing its final actions at Ephy, Cambrai and on the Selle and Sambre Rivers. After the occupation of Beaufort it moved back to the Hallencourt area.

78 Field Company would have been involved in all of the above operations. The unit War Diary can be found at the National Archive in

WO95/1993 covering July 1915 - April 1919.
