My Gr Uncle, Noah Roberts, served with the above in WW1 and was killed on 21/03/1918 and is burried in Kantara Cemetery in Egypt. Please could you tell me what the regiment were doing over there at this time?

Cheers

Hi ali

4th Cheshires were not involved in any fighting on 21/03/18, or in the days immediately preceding, according to the "History of the Cheshire Regiment in the Great War" and "History of the 53rd (Welsh) Division". A quick peek at "Soldiers Died" indicates that Noah "died" on 21/03/18, which indicates that he is likely to have died of illness or disease, rather than been killed by enemy action. And probably would have been in hospital at Kantara prior to his death.

THanks for that! Were they in Egypt throughout the war do you know?

Cheers

Hi again Alison

1st/4th Cheshires started off in Gallipoli, landing 09/08/15 and evacuating to Egypt in Dec 1915. Left 53 Div on 31/05/18 travelling via Alexandria and Taranto to the Western Front, joining 34 Div at Proven on 01/07/18. Stayed with 34 Div until the armistice.
