Mark Hone Posted 1 January , 2006 Share Posted 1 January , 2006 As reported elsewhere, the information gathering for my Bury Virtual War Memorial is turning up some complete men of mystery who do not appear to have existed in the first place, let alone died in the Great War. The latest is Private John Greenwood of the King's Own Scottish Borderers from Warth in Bury who supposedly died in September 1916. I have a photograph of him complete with glengarry from the Bury Times but trace of him in official records can I find none: CWGC, SDGW or MIC. No one called Greenwood seems to have served with the regiment in the war and a trawl of casualties for September 1916 from SDGW did not produce any likely candidates in terms of name or places of origin. Unless I'm missing something I have to assume he fought under an assumed name or the Bury Times made some monumental mistake in terms of regiment and probably date of death. I will try posting a copy of the photo when I have a more high definition copy.
