(my first posting!) I have a photo of "Cpl Maycroft`s squad,Coldstream Guards 1916." 30 soldiers total.. my grandfather being one of them.. and if anyone is interested I will list ALL the names..... ( 5 being on the WGC list I think) But what I would like to know is, How do I find out where he served from 1916 onwards. I do know he was at Ypres. Best regards for now, Chas...

Hi Chas, :)

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Please list the men you have, that would be great !!

Coldstreamer is a mine of information on the Coldsream Guards, so hopefully he will be able to help you out.

Cheers

Tim.

First thing you need to do is find out his battalion. The Guards Regiments did not have the large number of different battalions that other Regiments did so the job is a little easier.

If you post the names and especially your grandfather's names then it will give us a bit to work on.

As for Corporal Maycroft, he is probably one of these two men:

Medal card of Maycroft, William M

Corps: Coldstream Guards

Regiment No: 8421

Rank: Serjeant

Medal card of Maycroft, Harry P

Corps: Coldstream Guards

Regiment No: 16364

Rank: Private

Probably the former.

If you haven't found the Medal Card for your grandfather, then that is you first port of call:

Once we know a battalion we can trace his Division and thus his war.

Steve.

Here's the link to download your grandfather's Medal Index Card.

Medal card of Andrew, Edward M

Corps Regiment No Rank

Coldstream Guards 17493 Private

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...&resultcount=40

The number doesn't agree but more than likely the right man.

Also there are quite a few men with numbers around Edward's that match the list. Presumably these joined up at the same time as Edward.

Pte. Edward W Pateman, 17508 also won the MM or DCM.

Pte. Edward Capelin, 17530

Pte. Martin Kendall 17490

Pte. Chelton Niel 17515 also Army Pay Corps 23648

Pte George T Paver 17441

Pte. William Merritt 17491

Pte. John Rae 17501

Pte. Percy T Freeman 17550

Pte. Thomas C Knowles 17488

Pte. Leslie J Figgins 17534

Pte. Frederick Gurd 17489

Guardsman/Pte. Philip J Tancock 9326 (an original ?)

Pte. John Addy 17552

Pte. George F Holmes 17496

Pte. John M Edmondson 174s97

Steve.

EDIT : Pte. E. W. Pateman was from Midhurst and his MM was announced in the London Gazette of 28-1-1918 suggesting that he won the MM around November 1917 (possibly at Cambrai?)
