Max Posted 28 December , 2005 Share Posted 28 December , 2005 Which means that he was resident in the place of enlistment, i.e. Sheffield. Hello Steve Are you sure about this? My GGrandfather (in signature) was born at Batley and enlisted at Pontefract. He has no place of residence shown on SDGW but was not living at Pontefract at either the time of his enlistment or the time of his death. SOMMESOLDIER Posted 28 December , 2005 Share Posted 28 December , 2005 Hi Steve, I don't think that we can take that for granted. Although it is likely, I have seen many cases where men went back to their place of birth to enlist. There is every chance he may have lived in a village in the area and the recruitment would show up as in the nearest big Town or City. So as I said earlier possible and maybe even likely, but not definate !! Cheers Tim.
SPotter Posted 28 December , 2005 Share Posted 28 December , 2005 Gents, My assertion is based on the comment to be found on the first page of each volume of Soldiers Died in the Great War, underneath the Explanation of Abbreviations. "N.B. - When the place of enlistment is followed by the name of another place in brackets, the latter represents the deceased soldier's place of residence." I have always been led to be believe that unless the entry was qualified as above, the place of enlistment was also the place of residence. Comparisons made against soldiers papers I have copies of tend to bear this out. Regards Steve
