roger Posted 20 December , 2005 Share Posted 20 December , 2005 On one of the Great War memorials in Bedale is the name H Whitelock. Nothing else I’m afraid. A search of CWGC has led me to believe it could be this man, WHITELOCK, VIVIAN HERBERT Nationality: New Zealand Rank: Private Regiment: Otago Regiment, N.Z.E.F. Unit Text: 2nd Bn. Date of Death: 15/09/1916 Service No: 24/1859 Cemetery: CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL On the assumption that he was related to and possibly the brother of, WHITELOCK, RONALD AMBROSE Nationality: New Zealand Rank: Rifleman Regiment: New Zealand Rifle Brigade Unit Text: 2nd Bn. 3rd Age: 20 Date of Death: 24/02/1918 Service No: 45626 Additional information: Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Whitelock. Born at Aiskew, Bedale, Yorks, England. Cemetery: BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETERY Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. Roger. Stephen Nulty Posted 21 December , 2005 Share Posted 21 December , 2005 Roger It's possible that the men on the CWGC entries are brothers. The 1901 census (see below) shows Herbert V Whitelock, aged 16 to be the brother of Ronald A Whitelock, aged 4. Perhaps the H Whitelock mentioned on the Bedale memorial is Herbert Vivian. roger Posted 21 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 21 December , 2005 Thank you very much Stephen, that is a step closer to confirming what started off as a hunch. Could I trouble you and ask if you could email me a copy of the page of the census please. I have taken the liberty of sending you my email address Thank you again, Roger.
