RFC/RAF uniform question

Marco

Recommended Posts

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a fool-proof way to distinguish a RFC/RAF pilot and a motor dispatch rider when not in/on their mode of transport? Both have a helmet, goggles, and a lether jacket/coat without markings. What are the blokes on display at Albert and IWM London?

TIA!

Regards,

Marco

Marco,

The leather coats worn by Pilots was usually thickly lined to cope with the cold at altitude. In addition many piolts wore a long leather coat no practical for motorcycles. Same goes for the leather helmet being lined.

I am sure other also have ideas.

Oh yeah - another way is look at the uniform underneath to spot the pilots wings :D
