Simon R Posted 19 December , 2005 Share Posted 19 December , 2005 Can anyone help? Pte. J.S. Atkinson of the 2/7th West Yorkshire Regt. (Leeds Rifles) died on 19th March 1917 and is buried Ancre St Omer (according to original IWGC docs.), VIII E 29. Where was the 2/7th during March? What were they doing during this period? Information of specific day of death welcomed. Many thanks.
Paul Reed Posted 19 December , 2005 Share Posted 19 December , 2005 Curiously the details from the CWGC database states: Name: ATKINSON Initials: J S Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Rifleman Regiment: West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) Unit Text: 2nd/7th Bn. Date of Death: 19/11/1917 Service No: 265907 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: VIII. E. 29. 'Soldiers Died' (see below) confirms your date. Looks like they have the date wrong - I am sure they would correct it if you contacted them? In March 1917 they were holding the line around Beaucourt. Simon R Posted 19 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 19 December , 2005 Thanks for the SDGW look up, it is odd that it doesn't concur with CWGC. I have little time to follow this up right now, so you're help is much appreciated. Simon, cold, West Yorkshire.
