Hello

I am new to the forum, I am trying to trace any records of my grandad ;HAROLD HAINSWORTH who served in World War One and survived. He was from Farsley,West Yorkshire.

Would it be possible for somebody to check the Leeds Absent Voters List to see if his name appears on it.

I have checked the Medal Roll Index and found 6 records for a Harold Hainsworth

31247 Rank: Corporal Killed in Action ( so not him)

21/825 Rank: Corporal.

3382/201332 Rank: Private..

5851/201698/473940 Rank: Private..

154916 Rank: Gunner

5148 Rank: Private

How can I tell which one is my grandfather?

Any help much appreciated.

Royal Engineers Medal Cards and Medal Rolls usually give very little indication of what unit he was with.

If it helps I have got a smallish database of numbers that RE men have when Medals were awarded or when men were killed.

Around the number 98846 there seems to be a pattern:

Number Unit Type Dated Division (or Corps/Army)

98246 152 FC 23-7-1919 37

98276 3rd Field Sqdn 11-12-1918

98473 223 FC 20-8-1919 31

98539 95 FC 29-3-1919

98606 223 FC 7-7-1919 31

98621 223 FC 19-7-1919 31

98629 223 FC 17-6-1919 31

98661 3rd Field Survey Coy 7-7-1919

98768 31 DSC 4-9-1919 31

98802 31 DSC 19-7-1919 31

98864 31 DSC 17-6-1919 31

98871 E (IX) CSC 7-7-1919 C

99000 214 ATC 7-7-1919 A

99014 214 ATC 7-7-1919 A

99015 214 ATC 7-7-1919 A

99030 214 ATC 7-7-1919 A

99043 214 ATC 7-7-1919 A

99068 214 ATC SDGW 15-5-1916 A

99091 214 ATC 7-7-1919 A

99186 224 FC 7-7-1919 40

99201 224 FC 7-7-1919 40

99206 224 FC SDGW 25-6-1917 40

As you can see there is a (small) group of 3 x 31st Divisional Signal Company men and the preceding men are Field Company men attached to 31st Division. So although this isn't exactly solid proof, I would start with 31st Division if his service records do not still exist.

(And provided the Leeds man is the right one!)

Please treat this 'evidence' with caution for the time being, however 31st Division were briefly (Dec 1915 to March 1916) based in Egypt before fighting on the Western Front if that fits with any family memories.

Hi Rosaleen.

Just to complicate matters further and totally off the thread but is Leonard Hainsworth any relation?

Born Farsley and enlisted in the 16th Battalion (1st Bradfords) West Yorkshire Regiment. Unfortunately Killed in Action 25/2/17.

Just a long shot but who knows ;)

Regards, Chris.
