delta Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 2Lt Gordon Frederick Court was one of the original tank commanders; he was killed when his tank exploded during the attack on Geudecourt on 16th September and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. However, the London Gazette for 24 Nov 1916 shows him promoted to Temp Lt wef 1 Oct 1916. Was it normal for missing officers to be promoted? John S Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 (edited) I would imagine promotion from 2nd Lt to Lt as 'time based' and since he was only classed as missing the promotion would go through automatically. Would affect pay etc. regards John Edited 16 December , 2005 by John S
John_Hartley Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 No doubt just a matter of the paperwork catching up with events. John
Steven Broomfield Posted 16 December , 2005 Share Posted 16 December , 2005 Still happens - I made it to full corporal on Pt 2 Orders a month after I left the TA. Also, if he was 'missing', there was a time lapse before he was assumed to be deceased.
