Today i came across a soldier off my local memorial who served and died with the 4th Battalion Australian Infantry.

Can any of the PALS please give me any indication as to the likelyhood of his service record being available.

He lies buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, presumably he died on his way to France and Flanders??

I know nothing at all about the Australian Infantry, can anyone offer me a few words of advice on how to get his service record??

Thanks (again)

Hi Anthony

The National Archives of Australia holds his service record which can be seen at the following link

http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=1915896

If that doesn't work go through

http://www.naa.gov.au and click on the Recordsearch button which will take you to the search page.

You can either request a free digital copy or if you want a hard copy of the record you can fill out your details they will post it to you for a cost.

The honour roll at the Australian War Memorial website will also give you some details of his death and history

http://www.awm.gov.au/database/roh.asp

Plus the embarkation roll

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I should add that at the time of his death the 4th Battalion were engaged at Gallipoli. Hopefully when you get the service record you will be able to tell whether or not Wood served at Gallipoli. He was in the 3rd reinforcements to the 4th Battalion so I guess it is possible as they would have arrived at Gallipoli around May or June.

I have got his embarkation roll and also the honour roll, some really good stuff on there.

I have requested his service record. Roughly how long will it take and how do you know they have received the request?

Sorry if i sound a bit dumb!!

Hi Anthony

If you requested the service record to be digitised it might take around 3 to 4 weeks depending on how many requests they have received. They don't contact you when they have digitised it so it would be worthwhile checking their website after about 3 weeks to see if it's been done.

If you requested a copy to be posted it would probably be the same amount of time.

Cheers

Andrew
