Guest Chris Witcomb Posted 14 December , 2005 Share Posted 14 December , 2005 Hi I'm researching my great grandfather and am trying to establish where he was serving when listed as missing / killed in action on 19th August 1916. He's one of the 'missing' remembered on Theipval Memorial. Pte William Allen, 6937, 2nd Battn Suffolk Reg Fellow member, Bob, suggested the 2nd Battn were around Maltz Horn Farm, near Trones Wood. I don't suppose any photos exist of the 2nd Battn in this area ? Regards Chris
Steven Broomfield Posted 15 December , 2005 Share Posted 15 December , 2005 Chris - Bob may have told you this, but the regimental history comments that the 2nd Suffolks supported an attack by 10 RWF, which was then taken on by 1 Gordons. Two coys of the Suffolk supported the Gordons 'by fire', from Cochrane Avenue (near Malz Horn Farm. The attack was so successful that the Germans plastered the area with 5.9s. The Bn lost 12 officers and 269 other ranks.
Guest Chris Witcomb Posted 15 December , 2005 Share Posted 15 December , 2005 Steve Many thanks, and to Bob. This is really very valuable to us. I guess we'll try to visit the area next summer. Once again, many thanks. Regards Chris
