JEG Posted 12 December , 2005 Share Posted 12 December , 2005 I would be grateful for any ideas about the attached photograph. It is a photograph of my aunt who served in the Women’s Royal Air Force. I think this might be her in uniform. Can anyone confirm if this was a uniform of the WRAF? Many thanks, Janet
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 12 December , 2005 Share Posted 12 December , 2005 The triangular badge on her cap is a "On War Service 1916" Pin back badge worn by Munitions Etc workers,& the overalls type dress suggests that sort of employment, rather than WRAF uniform, which was generally of heavier material, with Full Skirt & Tunic. Was she in Munitions/War work before joining the WRAF?
Jim Strawbridge Posted 13 December , 2005 Share Posted 13 December , 2005 I agree, it looks like munition worker's attire. I believe that clothing was provided and had to be worn at all times whilst on duty as the fabric was least likely to "spark" from static electricity. I also believe that pockets were omitted so that there could be no temptation to carry matches, cigarettes and the like. The triangular badge on the hat seals it for me as being munitions.
