Mark Crame Posted 10 December , 2005 Share Posted 10 December , 2005 Ok, they spelt his name wrong - on the medals too - but this is what I have. Name: Crane Frederick C (then an X - what's that?) Corps: 16 Lrs - 16th Lancers Rank: Sjt - Serjeant Regt No: 16L 5493 Medals Roll Page Victory - X - CC/124/81 4 (got the medal) British - - - - (got the medal) why not recorded? Star - 14 - CC/45 80 (got the medal) CC or GG? SWB - CC/56 (got the badge) Theatre of war served in blank - (he was in France and Belgium with the BEF) Date of entry therein 17/8/14 Dis: 26/4/15 Discharge (yeah, that matches) Why no mention of the clasp? 'Under artillery'? Sure thing, I have the shrapnel that went into his thigh, have the mention in the diary and casualty returns etc. Can this be claimed still if proof is given? I'd assumed he'd lost it. Deserved it for sure. Anyway, Roll numbers, where do I find these ones please? Thanks for any help, mark

Stebie9173 Posted 10 December , 2005 Share Posted 10 December , 2005 The X's usually denote the details for the engraver to put on the medals. British is ditto to Victory Medal reference (in line with 99.9% of other medal cards) 1914 Star reference is probably CC in line with VM/BWM reference. The Rolls are at the National Archives at Kew. A recipient of the 1914 Star HAD to be in France. The Clasp seems to have been claimned and probably lost as he has attached his "roses" to the ribbon in it's stead. The Clasp reference is not always on the medal card. My great-uncle (captured at Le Cateau) had no reference to them on hois card, though he may not have claimed them. They can no longer be claimed, though you could probably find an "Orphaned" clasp. The SWB rolls should add a date of enlistment if you don't have it already. Steve. Mark Crame Posted 10 December , 2005 Author Share Posted 10 December , 2005 Thanks Steve! Didn't the rose distinguish between 14 and 14/15 star on a ribbon bar? I'd always assumed, like you that he'd lost the bar, but not being recorded on his MIC I now assume (bad move) that he never got it. I don't want an orphan on principle. I think HM should have one supplied - I'm sure she knows who to speak too! This is the data on him so far: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...showtopic=42643 apart from the rest that i gathered and typed up since last week.
