David_Bluestein Posted 7 December , 2005 Share Posted 7 December , 2005 Looking for any info on the 1st Hampshire’s on July 1, 1916. I know that the 1st Bn. Hampshire Regt. was for the most part obliterated on July 1, 1916. I remember a statement in Martin Middlebrooks book (First Day On The Somme) that read something like: ‘…there was nobody left at the end of the day to accurately describe what had happened to the Battalion.’ My interest is knowing if there are any sources that members may know of that detail the actual actions that unfolded for the 1st Hampshire’s on July 1, 1916. (i.e.: Regimental History etc.?) Thank you in advance for your consideration. David
Jack Sheldon Posted 7 December , 2005 Share Posted 7 December , 2005 David Michael Renshaw, who wrote the Battleground Europe guide 'Redan Ridge' could not find out much either, but he does include a fairly lengthy personal account by Lieutenant ED Shearn. I suggest that you try to get this book, which will provide a useful overview of events on the ridge that day for you. Jack
