Guest Tah-m Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 I'm a novice at all this -s o be gentle!! Colleague has just lost her mother - and among the personal effects is a brooch depicting 94th Russells Infantry. (Lion kissing sword above number 94 and "banner" with green background at the bottom stating "Russells Infantry") Pretty brooch! She would like to find out a little more about this - as it is probable that grandfather served in this unit (name of O'Brien). Irish connection ??? Unfortunately no family members available now to ask for more info. does anyone have any info on Russells 94th that I can pass on - I'm getting nowhere trawling the net with the exception of one mention on the Cheltenham War memorial!!! Many thanks
Graham Stewart Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 Tah-m Welcome to the Forum. In answer to your question the 94th Russells Infantry are an Indian Army unit created in 1903 from the 1st Infantry, Hyderabad Contingent. During the Great War it was expanded to two battalions and in 1922 it became the 1st Bn, 19th Hyderabad Regiment(Russells). Major Donovan Jackson's pocket book "Indias Army" contains a nice history of the Regiment. Graham.
