Have being doing a bit of research on a distant relative - Pte Harry Radford, 20496, 2nd Battalion KOYLI -who was killed in action in 1915. Have found out quite a bit with the help of this site, but now have another question. Would his medals have been sent to the family as a matter of course, or would the family have had to claim them?

Thanks to anyone who replies.

Hi

Officers had to apply for their medals, other ranks had their medals sent to their last known address. Sometimes medals which were not able to be delivered were returned to issuing authorities.

In the case of three of my relatives I have been able to track so far, and who were awarded medals, all of the medals have been lost by the families concerned.

Hope this helps.

Medals were sent Registered Post & consequently had to be signed for{unlike today, when SD items are undelivered & a card left, then re~delivery would be attempted many times & then left @ the Local PO for collection}Have you checked your ancestors Medal Cards, these usually denote if Medals were returned,in the comments section on the Card{downloaded}:Medal Index Card Search <Click Here!>

Thanks to both of you. I've downloaded the medal card and it says nothing about them being returned, so i think I'm going to have to assume that they have been lost somewhere in the family.
