The 2nd Division history notes that '[24th August] the three battalions [of 5th Brigade] which had been hurriedly dispatched on the previous night to Frameries and Paturages to fill the gap between the 5th and 3rd Divisions, still remained in the latter villages, and in consequence saw more fighting on the first day of the retreat than any other unit of the 2nd Division. On the night of the 24th the 2nd Division lay on the line Bavai-La Longueville, the majority of the troops getting to their billets between the hours of 6 and 8 pm. In the early hours before dawn of the 25th the retirement was therefore continued. Orders were issued to the 2nd Division to continue the march southwards, the 5th Infantry Brigade... to Noyelles. The 5th Infantry Brigade [moved] on their billets [at] Noyelles with little interference. The 5th Brigade marched out of billets at Bavai at dawn on the 26th, assisted by the 5th Cavalry Brigade, covering its retirement. The march was uneventful until Chene-au-Loup was reached; but here a long halt took place, and the Brigade received orders to hold all the crossings over the Sambre at Pont-sur-Sambre, at Aymeries, Aulnoye, and Sassignes, the enemy having opened fire on the rearguard after the 5th Infantry Brigade had left Bavai. At 4.30 pm the 5th Infantry Brigade continued its march... reaching Noyelles at 10 pm.

Robert - that's 1914. I must admit I started looking there, too, then realised the question was 15.

The Divnl History is quite reticent: the whole period from May (end of Festubert) to September (Loos) is covered in about4 and a half pages. It seems the division spent the period in trenches round Givenchy and Cuinchy, seeing the introduction of flame-throwers (by the Germans), hand grenades (us), the West Bomb Thrower (us again), and aerial torpedoes (German).

Other than that, sweet Fanny Adams!
