kin47 Posted 30 November , 2005 Share Posted 30 November , 2005 Hello From the May 1916 NAVY LIST, Sir Herbert was the commanding officer of HMS ROYALIST, serving in that capacity from 23 Jan 15 don
historydavid Posted 30 November , 2005 Share Posted 30 November , 2005 Incidently, it was HMS Royalist that picked uo Jellicoe from his father-in-law's house at Dundee and took him out to HMS Iron Duke, which was already at sea. Gilgamesh of Uruk Posted 30 November , 2005 Share Posted 30 November , 2005 HMS Caroline's captain at Jutland was Capt. H R Crooke, as far as I can tell. Anyone got any good gen on what is due to happen to her when she finally retires as Drill Ship for Belfast? She MUST be saved, as the last Jutland veteran, surely? BTW - to be really pedantic, surely one serves IN rather than ON a vessel?

kin47 Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 Hello Meade was Knighted in 1929. Prior to that, he was The Honourable Herbert Meade. CB. CVO, DSO. He was not listed as Meade-Fetherstonhaugh until early 1932. Prior to that, his family name is shown only as Meade. All best don
historydavid Posted 3 December , 2005 Share Posted 3 December , 2005 Thanks for that Don. It explains why I have Meade as CO of the Royalist. Best wishes David
kin47 Posted 4 December , 2005 Share Posted 4 December , 2005 Hello For those are not acquainted with this source, there is a website for the Gazettes listing Honours and Awards. www.gazettes-online.co.uk Although there is a search engine, sometimes you will have to go through several issues to find the specific information wanted. Sir Herbert's Honours and Awards are all listed. In addition, the reports of the Officers in Command of the battles and engagements are published, although, for obvious reasons, many months after the event. Gilgamesh of Uruk Posted 6 December , 2005 Share Posted 6 December , 2005 There are changes being made to the Historic Ships Register system which it would be a good idea if some of us with an interest kept an eye on. For the record, the following WWI veteran warships ships are listed on the registers : HMS Caroline - last Jutland veteran still at Belfast. President (ex Saxifrage) - now privately owned, corporate hostility venue on the Thames M33 (now the Gallipoli Memorial Ship) in drydock at Portsmouth (about a cable from HMS Victory). Currently owned by Hants C.C., but a chance she'll find her way into the Historic Dockyard's ownership. Demon (ex HMS Handy) - last of the Rendel gunboats, served on French coast 1914-1915. Now owned by a Portsmouth shipbreakers, who are said to be willing to hand her over to anyone who wants her & can afford to preserve her. Agar's CMB4 - last saw her at IWM Duxford. Hull only, no engine 9at least no engine fitted) Dumb aircraft lighter rusting nicely outside FAA Museum Yeovilton Claims about others - including a "beetle" X-lighter and ML hulls used as houseboats have been made - but not substantiated, AFIK.
