karsharn Posted 25 November , 2005 Share Posted 25 November , 2005 I have found my G Grandads medel card and would like some help with interperating it. It appears that he was in the Essex Reg and the RAMC. His 1914 - 18 medal has Essex Reg on the edge but no mention of RAMC. How does this work was he in Essex but assigned to RAMC or visa versa ? Any help would be greatfully received
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 26 November , 2005 Share Posted 26 November , 2005 It means that he enlisted into the Essex Regiment, but later transferred/was posted to the RAMC*,either prior to embarkation or after it.Medals were issued{normally} to the unit first assigned to{hence we get Medals named to Units that didnt serve Overseas, such as Huntingdonshire Cyclists etc; I hope this helps. *His Medals being issued from RAMC Records, hence their Roll Page references, but an X with Dots by "Essex Regt" would usually signify that that is the Regiment that they should be named up to,this however is not on this card.
