Guest kimbrocklehurst Posted 15 August , 2003 Share Posted 15 August , 2003 I would today particularly like to remember my great-uncle: PRIVATE 4176 WILFRED MAJOR BOFFEY, 1/7 Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers, att. 1/7 Bn. Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) who was killed on 15 August 1916 by enemy shellfire whilst on gas sentry duty in front of Caterpillar Wood (the sliver of wood immediately to the south of Thiepval Wood). He was 20, and had been in France for three weeks. He was sent, with 49 fellow NFs, to reinforce the Duke's a few days after disembarking. Wilfred was born in Wheelock, nr. Sandbach in Cheshire, and was living at the time he joined up in the Devonshire Hotel (now The Eagle), Buxton, Derbyshire, with his mother who ran it. Thank you, uncle, for all that you and your comrades did. I shall never forget. R I P. I would be pleased to hear from any "Pals" (on or off-forum) who have an interest in either 1/7 NFs or 1/7 Duke's, particularly for 1916.
