Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim received the Order of St. Vladimir (1914 & 1916), Order of St. George (1914), Order of St. Stanislaus (1914), Order of St. Anne (1914) from Russia. He also received the Iron Cross 2nd class (1918), Iron Cross 1st class (1918). This means that during the war he was decorated by both the Czar and the Kaiser.

My favourite 'odd' group is that to the Finnish soldier Lauri Törni.

After winning every gallantry medal that Finland awarded (including their version of the VC), he was awarded the Iron Cross by the Germans. At the end of the war he went to America and became a Green Beret. He was killed during the Vietnam war and to his group was added several American awards, including the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart (3 oak leaf clusters) etc. That is a group I would love to see!

When his remains were recovered he was buried at Arlington.
