Remembered Today:

Fallen Railwaymen

Wiltshire

Recommended Posts

I have heard there us a recently formed organisation dealing with fallen railwaymen of the Great War. I have tried to locate a website without success. Does anyone know of this organisation and if they have a website I could visit?

The only one I know of is the website detailingn the LNWR Roll of Honour.

It's here - clickety click.

Like wise the only specific site that I have found is:-

www.roll-of-honour.com/Wiltshire/SwindonGWRLoco.html

Not a specific site though.

Also as I understand it, most GWR records are at TNA anyway. Another possibility may be to contact "Steam" the museum of the GWR in Swindon.

Sorry I could'nt be of much further help

Best Wishes

James

Came across a website regarding a book review of Remembrance, by

Mark Quinlan. A mention is made which I quote below:

'At the same time, the manager of a central London railway terminus was collecting details of all 18,957 British railwaymen who died in the Great War, with the intention of placing them on a website for posterity'

The website:

Not a website but there is also "Servicemen of the London & North Western Railways Died in The Great War", a roll of honour.

I have a copy if anyone would like a look-up.

Hi Whiltshire

are you looking for any particular railway company? There was something like 150 railway companies in the UK around the time of WW1.

I belive the person that Ian mentions is a WFA member and I think he works for Network Rail as I do, so I will try and find out some info when I'm at work tomorrow.

Some sites you could try are

http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Kent/DoverMarine.html

http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Kent/AshfordRail.html

both the above are for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway

http://www.btp.police.uk/History%20Society...20honor/WW1.htm

for the BT Police

http://www.railwayancestors.fsnet.co.uk/

this is a general geneaolgy website for railway ancestors they may be useful.

Many thanks for your reply. The person I am trying to find out about is on the 1914/1918 war memorial at Waterloo Station, London. His name is given as C Grist (my family name but not a relative as far as I know). I presume he was working at the time for the Southern Railway Company but I am not too familiar with railway history. From the Roll-of-Honour website I discovered he was a Private so at least I know he was not in the navy.

Is it possible to find out more about this man?

Regards

Graham

Graham,

Your man would have been employed by the LSWR, one of the constituent companies that formed the Southern Railway in 1923.

John, thought you may know Chester Station. A listing is on Carl's Cam website:

http://www.carlscam.com/index.html

To get to the list select Cheshire, Photos, Places and then scroll down to Chester. Select War Memorial Great Western Railway. Lists 2,524 GWR men.

cheers,

Thanks - I did know it was on Carlscam (but havnt see it in "real life")

For the wider audience - carlscam.com is a family history website belonging to Carl Rogerson (we swap website links). Carl photgraphs memorials (not just war memorials) throughout Cheshire. If you think your researcheee may have come from Cheshire - check out the site to see if your guy is listed on a memorial.

Carl's site is the dog's b***ocks and I take every opportunity to plug it.

There's a GWR roll of honour on Exeter St David's Train station platform.  It lists the men and their and regions/station/department.

Duncan.

There's also one at Newton Abbot, can't recall the platform, but it's the one normally used by trains going to Paddington.

Unfortunately inside the ticket office.Perhaps the others are viewable by the public?
