I have tried to locate a website without success. Does anyone know of this organisation and if they have a website I could visit?

tombowcock Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 The only one I know of is the website detailingn the LNWR Roll of Honour. It's here - clickety click. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Like wise the only specific site that I have found is:- www.roll-of-honour.com/Wiltshire/SwindonGWRLoco.html Not a specific site though. Also as I understand it, most GWR records are at TNA anyway. Another possibility may be to contact "Steam" the museum of the GWR in Swindon. Sorry I could'nt be of much further help Best Wishes James
ian turner Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Came across a website regarding a book review of Remembrance, by Mark Quinlan. A mention is made which I quote below: 'At the same time, the manager of a central London railway terminus was collecting details of all 18,957 British railwaymen who died in the Great War, with the intention of placing them on a website for posterity' The website: http://www.authorsonline.co.uk/New/Sample.asp?eBookID=421 Ian

mickgall Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Hi Whiltshire are you looking for any particular railway company? There was something like 150 railway companies in the UK around the time of WW1. I belive the person that Ian mentions is a WFA member and I think he works for Network Rail as I do, so I will try and find out some info when I'm at work tomorrow. Some sites you could try are http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Kent/DoverMarine.html http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Kent/AshfordRail.html both the above are for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway http://www.btp.police.uk/History%20Society...20honor/WW1.htm for the BT Police http://www.railwayancestors.fsnet.co.uk/ this is a general geneaolgy website for railway ancestors they may be useful. Wiltshire Posted 17 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Mick Many thanks for your reply. The person I am trying to find out about is on the 1914/1918 war memorial at Waterloo Station, London. His name is given as C Grist (my family name but not a relative as far as I know). I presume he was working at the time for the Southern Railway Company but I am not too familiar with railway history. From the Roll-of-Honour website I discovered he was a Private so at least I know he was not in the navy. Is it possible to find out more about this man? Horace Bachelor Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Graham, Your man would have been employed by the LSWR, one of the constituent companies that formed the Southern Railway in 1923. Rich

John_Hartley Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Geoff Thanks - I did know it was on Carlscam (but havnt see it in "real life") For the wider audience - carlscam.com is a family history website belonging to Carl Rogerson (we swap website links). Carl photgraphs memorials (not just war memorials) throughout Cheshire. If you think your researcheee may have come from Cheshire - check out the site to see if your guy is listed on a memorial. Carl's site is the dog's b***ocks and I take every opportunity to plug it. John
