KONDOA Posted 15 November , 2005 Share Posted 15 November , 2005 Pte Reginald JARVIS, SC/55 South African Signal Service, who died aged 29 on 15.11.16. Dodoma Cemetery, Tanzania At the time of his death there were signal depots established at Morogoro and Dodoma. Within a few days the telegraph lines had been extended to Tobora, a signal school was also at Dadoma. Private Jarvis would no doubt be associated with these activities . It was the start of the rainy season and malaria was taking a heavy toll on the troops along the Central Railway. So severe was the rain that year that porters had to wade waist deep for miles to ensure supplies were received, fighting came to a halt down on the Rufigi with temporary truces to allow the Germans to collect their mail from Dakawa behind the British positions. The casualty toll was very high with many units reduced to but a few hundred. Roop
