Thanks for the posting. I'm researching the Buffs and it's always difficult to find photographs. I presume these were initiated by their next of kin.

Hi Mick, I was wondering that myself, maybe, do you think? although they look like service pictures - something taken for official records, would the families have a copy?

Maybe someone can tell us

Desmond, many thanks for the follow up postings

I would take a fair guess that these were submitted by friends or family.

In my experience, you will often find that the 'head and shoulders' shot has been cropped from a larger portrait picture, usually a full uniform shot. In many cases there will be other men in such pictures too.

Best wishes

I agree Des. I've never seen reference to photos of individuals taken for official purposes.

Mick

Didn't their service records have an official photo on ?

None of my ancestors WW1 war records have survived so I've never actually seen one

My ancestors weren't that well off but they always seemed to don best bib and tucker to pose for a family group photo with whichever soldier was going off to war

Maybe the families sent off their own photos to the newspaper with an SAE and the newspaper 'edited' them down to put a notice in then?

Like this one. This is one of my grandparents with an as yet unidentified CARNEY brother, there were five in total
