joseph Posted 8 November , 2005 Share Posted 8 November , 2005 Bart, It was so seamen and other branches could help in coaling ship and move the coal forward in the holds. If more speed was required on coal burners the seamen on watch would be sent below to bring the coal forward so the stokers could feed the boilers.
