petestenning Posted 5 November , 2005 Share Posted 5 November , 2005 I would be grateful for any information on my Grandfarthers brother, Shadrach Stenning he served with the Royal Sussex Regiment in WW1 , i know he was married to Ellen Cleary from Ballygub Killkenny. He was injured and went to Ireland to re-cuperate with his family, before being sent back to fight against the Turks and was killed at Beersheva in 1917. This much i know, also he did live in Horsham at the Barracks i believe with his wife. I am researching my family history and am fascinated by this man and his life, i hope someone can give me some information regarding his military life and regiment. Thank you Peter Stenning. Glyn this may just be a coincidence but my grandmothers surname on my mothers side is Wildish, which i note is on the bottom of your post. Do your Wildish come form Kent by any chance?. Stebie9173 Posted 5 November , 2005 Share Posted 5 November , 2005 Medal Index Card download page: Medal card of Stenning, Shadrack Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Sussex Regiment 7514 Private Royal Sussex Regiment 7514 Acting Corporal http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...&resultcount=24 I believe that the L/ prefix denotes Home Counties regiments regulars, therefore probably 1st or 2nd Battalion then transferred to the 1/4th after injury. When she was a child she does remember the name Minnie being used but that is as far as she knows, whether it was a friend or relative is unknown Our Wildish family came from the Biddenden/Tenterden area in the late 1800 s early 1900 S. All the relatives my mum remembers from around 1920 -1933 were living in Staplehurst/Cranbrook area.
