steve140968 Posted 2 November , 2005 Share Posted 2 November , 2005 Duncan , as far as i'm aware it is not possible to tell your soldiers battalion by his service number . I think that the 'G' denotes new army - ie, having joined after the outbreak of war , though i stand to be corrected . I take it because you have seen the medal rolls you have been to the national archives ! Have you looked for his service records which would almost certainly show his battalion ? Regards , Steve . lithgow Posted 11 December , 2005 Share Posted 11 December , 2005 Duncan My great-grandfather George Lithgow was numbered G/92640. Medal card has him enlisted into Middlesex regiment. However medal rolls note he was attached to 2/7th London Regiment and 1/7th London Regiment throughout war service. He enlisted 16-11-15 (probably under the Derby scheme) and discharged with wounds 16-4-19. I dont know how he ended with Middlesex or London Reg as he was from Edinburgh. Middlesex where affiliated with the 7th London, but I dont know how many Middlesex men where attached to 'the shiny seventh'. All the best Stephen Lithgow
