Remembered Today:

55th Division Concert Party

I would be very interested if anyone has any photographs of or information about the 55th West Lancashire Division's Concert Party. 'The Red Roses'. The only thing I know about them is their name.

They produced several revues at the Divisional Theatre & Cinema, including one called 'Thumbs Up'. Their leading lady only ever chose his stage name for credits, it being 'Poppy Poperinghe' and I would like to identify him. Their regular pianist was Pte Honderwood.

Pte Honderwood is likely to have been Robert, born 1890/1, into a grocer's family of Golborne near Wigan, and served with the King's.

The plan is to recreate them for our next battlefields tour. We already do a short concert at the end of each tour, and it would be nice to give it an extra ingredient. I have already partly written a theme song to the tune of 'Lassie From Lancashire'. If we could get a photo of the real troupe it would be fantastic. Thanks for replying, Kate.

You might like to contact the Liverpool Record Office, if you have not done so already. They hold General Jeudwine's papers and there may well be reference to the Red Roses in them. Kate Wills may be able to confirm this.

I haven't consulted Liverpool RO on this, but if you find a mention (indeed on anything connected with concert parties) I would be interested to know.

I have photocopies of a couple of 55th Div. programmes if that helps your tour plans Mark, but no photos I'm afraid.

Kate. Not 55th Div., but I do have a ww1 pair to an officer in the RAF who ran a concert party. With the medals is a considerable ampount of original paperwork and a fantastic photo album showing one of the CP's productions.

I cannot recall seeing anything in the 55th records relating to the CP.
