Good Morning Pals,

Researching the battle of Hamel (see my website). I thought that maybe someone could help me or find someone in his contacts about my research about Corporal Thomas A. Pope, 33rd US Div, 131st rgmt, E coy.

He was awarded the firt medal of honor of WW1 for his gallantry in Hamel. I am on searching more informations about him and compare to the Australian VCs there is not a lot in books or on the internet.

Regards,

Nicolas

Hi Nicholas,

From American Decorations 1862-1926:

Pope, THomas A. (1387320) Born: Chicago Illinois, enlisted Chicago Illinois

Corp Co E 131st Inf 33rd Division

His company was advancing behind the tanks when it was halted by hostile machine gun fire. Going forward alone he rushed a machine gun nest, killed several of the crew with his bayonet, and, standing astride of his gun , held off the others until reinforcements arrived and captured them.

Hope this helps,

Neil
