Hambo Posted 14 October , 2005 Share Posted 14 October , 2005 I'm looking for any information for the 1/8th for the period covering their trench raid on the 18th of March 1917, war diary would be ideal. Can anyone help? Hambo
Malcolm Posted 14 October , 2005 Share Posted 14 October , 2005 Unfortunately no. I do have some bits of the diary for Beaumont Hamel 1916 and Buzancy 1918. I have the 51st History should you want a scan of the details. Casualties given were 8 Officers and 102 ORs of whom a total of 4 Officers and 31 ORs died. Hambo Posted 15 October , 2005 Author Share Posted 15 October , 2005 Thanks Malcom I have the 51st history as well which I thought was pretty detailed, just, as ever, seeing if there is a little more out there somewhere. I have a friend in the states whose great uncle died of wounds the next day following the raid and he's given me copies of letters written by the boy and one written by his father to a relative following the news. It was very moving, they were a different breed. I thought I try to find out more. The letter quotes the telegram as "gunshot, abdomen" which said to me he must have been out of the trench to get hit there, the raid bears that out. He is buried at a cemetery used by 42nd CCS so there's quite a bit to go on, but I suspect that the account in the divisional history might be as far as I get unless I can find a personal account of the action For the record he was Private William George Robertson 303424 he was 19 (not recorded by CWGC) and he had only gone out shortly before he was killed (there is mention of new drafts in the divisional history). I know you're the Scottish expert so any help would be really appreciated Thanks Hambo

Hambo Posted 16 October , 2005 Author Share Posted 16 October , 2005 Malcom Do you happen to know where the war diaries would be kept, I get north of the border quite regularly Thanks Hambo
Malcolm Posted 16 October , 2005 Share Posted 16 October , 2005 Hambo, You can get a look at the complete diary WITH all relevant attached papers ( weeded out at PRO) at the Argyle Museum research room at Stirling Castle. You must make an appointment with them first and the custodians will escort you up to the museum when you arrive. I also got copies of some of the maps. Worth giving them the railfare to London as a donation! Aye Malcolm
