I am researching the above soldier Lance Sergeant 40861 Frank Snowden. SDGW have him in the 16th Manchesters formerly in the Notts Derbys (Reg No4045). It states on the SDGW record that he had the DCM . I have tried to find him in the London Gazette but no succsess.

Can any body help as to when he gained the DCM and what does the citation say.

Thanks in anticipation

Dorrie

A bit non-descript but probably explains his transfer to the Manchesters, especially as it mentions he has moved in the meantime.

Probably won October 1916 by that time (original delay of 2 months to Gazette was just staring to slip a bit). The other DCMs for the SF might help cast some light on exactly when...

Just a guess, but 2nd Battalion at Transloy, maybe?

Perhaps there was a mistake in the entry. Have you tried SNOWDON. There are several enteries under this name.

Just a suggestion,

Ken

On second thoughts I suppose you have tried all the alternatives, but how about

F SNOWDEN

Thanks, Ken, but I think it's just a matter of a mistake on the war memorial. The SDGW information and CWGC both tie in with the man being born in Retford. His birth is registered in the name of Snowdin and except for the slight variation in spelling, it's going to be the same man.

All Tim needs to do now is get his chisel out and change the memorial. Ahem.

Steve.

To many security cameras now in Retford, no doubt they would pick me up as they don't appear to be too hot on what they are supposed to be there for.
