Dear Dave,

Looking at the info you've provided I can tell you that George Henry Wickens died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and was part of the 1st Hampshires.

On that day they lost 26 officers and 559 men in their attack, including their C.O. Their diary states:

Our casualties in officers amounted to 100% and was so heavy in other ranks

They were part of the 4th Division who attacked the German frontline at and around Beaumont Hamel.

Harold John Wickens died in the final phases of the same battle. The final attacks went in and around Beaumont Hamel and that included Redan Ridge which was captured by the 2nd Division on the 13th November 1916. What is poignant about that is that is not far from where George would have been when he died. Harold formerly served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment, his service number being 25518.

Arthur Edward Wickens died on the first day of the The Battle of the Canal du Nord which was an overall battle to capture the Hindenburg Line.

I'm afraid I can't find much info on Charles.

What I would suggest is that you locate their Medal Index Cards from the National Archives. You do all that online, I would also suggest you see if the war diaries for each battalion is also available to download from the NA. I've providd you a link of how to do all that below:

Hope this helps. If you have any more queries please don't hesitate to contact me by PM.

You might be interested to know that the book 'Responding to the Call' ,about Royal Berks Kitchener Bns in 1914-1915, also lists the death of a 18271 Pte William Oscar Wickens of the 8th Bn. Any relation?
