Remembered Today:

Arthur Hartley

While doing a bit more work on my great uncle, Richard Whiteside,

I happened to look a bit more closer on this plaque and noticed Arthur Hartley.

There are quite a few A and Arthur Hartley's in the CWGC listing but one that may be him (in my opinion only) is Arthur Hartley Pte 29453, born Nelson, enlisted in Burnley in the East Lancs.

Son of John Thomas and Ellen Jane Hartley, of Fern Cottage, Bamford St., Nelson, Lancs.

Would he be one of yours, John?

He's not one of mine - at least not that I know of.

CWGC has 494 Hartleys. If you look at Regiment, you'll see a high rate of northern ones. We come from "oop north" as a clan, seemingly.

From round your old neck of the woods, Wycoller Hall (somewhere round Pendle) was built by Piers Hartley in 1500 (or so).

A quick Google reveals a number of historically "posh" families with the name with differing family mottos. My favourite being "Spectrum agenda" - Lets us be judged by our actions.
