The aeroplane in question should be a BE 2d or BE 2e built by Bristol in the serial range 5730 to 5879. Are any individual aircraft or squadron markings visible?

If you could scan and post the photo it might help someone to identify the incident. Perhaps it's worth remembering that if an aircraft was damaged in combat, and then force landed behind the lines, there would probably be no shell holes or the like in the area.

It looks more like a BE 2d than a BE 2e; the fuel tank under the port upper wing isn't visible, but the photo isn't the clearest, so it's probably there. The aeroplane doesn't appear to have the BE 2e's unequal-span wings and aileron connecting strut.

I think that's the best that I can do.
