In 1914 the government decided they wanted to double the size of the territorial force by turning each battalion into two, those men who elected to volunteer for active service formed the new first line battalions and went into training for the front, and those who wished to retain their home defence status formed the second line battalions. In both cases the battalion’s numbers were made up to full strength with new recruits.

Holmfirth’s local territorial army unit changed from 5th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment, into 1st 5th and 2nd 5th Battalions, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. Until the introduction of conscription in 1916, only the 1st line battalions manned by volunteers could be sent overseas.

Tony.
