Good Afternoon,

Could anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can look for service information on Ernest Robert Holness ,Sergeant The Buffs.

The only information we have is...Ernest was born 1881 Herne Bay. Kent.

1932 he was a Corporal 1st Battalion The Buffs at Maymyo Burma. ( information from his daughters marriage certificate )

Ernest died 1968 Kent.

I have tried all The Buffs websites.

He was my friends Great Grandfather and we are not sure if the MOD will give any information as she is not direct next of kin.

Many Thanks Karen.

Gordon,

Thank you very much for the information.

We know 1906 he married Caroline Lashwood in Sheppey and he was working as Messman at the Gunnery school Sheerness.

He had a daughter Maisie born 1912 he came to Wales for her funeral in 1951 and that was the last the family ever saw of him.

We shall keep looking.

Thank you again for your help.

Karen.

Sorry had an awful job trying to reply. Hope I have not made a mess of the board :(

Well he was the only ER Holness in the Buffs during WW1. The L prefix means he was a regular soldier and I'm trying to work out why he had 2 regular numbers during the war. Here are the medal rolls. First the British War Medal/Victory Medal

...and the 1915/15 Star which indicates that he went overseas with the 2nd Battalion.

You could check for his service record at the National Archives which will confirm his ID (if you find the record). The photograph is going to be very difficult to find; the army didn't keep photos in their files.

If you find his record and can confirm when he moved to the 1st Battalion we will be able to piece together his movements during WW1

Ignore what I said about the service records at Kew - I hadn't read your post correctly.

It is worth your friend contacting Kentigern House in Glasgow to see if they have any more info.
