Following the release of gas at around 3:30 a.m. and a tremendous bombardment, the Germans launched their first infantry attack of 24 April at around 4 a.m.

The brunt of this attack fell on the northern wing of the Apex held by the Cnd.

On the right, the 5th Battalion under Tuxford held. To his left, the 8th Battalion stood. To the 8th's left, was the 15th Battalion under Col J.A. Currie; this battalion was decimated -- largely because it took the brunt of the gas.

In their book on 2nd Ypres, McWilliams and Steel indicate that the 233rd RIR attacked the 15th. The map in the German Official history suggests that the attacking force for the 4 a.m. attack was the R.E. 4.

The 233rd, if I am reading the map correctly, attacked the 13th Battalion at around 8 a.m.

Does anyone have any clearly maps/timelines?

Thanks,

Nathan
