massie Posted 27 September , 2005 Share Posted 27 September , 2005 I have my grandfather's paybook, and have found the officer who signed it between getting to France and getting killed (the officer). Does anyone know whether an officer would sign for his company (which would identify the company my grandfather was in), or whether one officer would have looked after the whole battalion? charlesmessenger Posted 27 September , 2005 Share Posted 27 September , 2005 The usual British Army practice was to pay the men by companies and so it is feasible to establish the company your grandfather was in through the paying officer who would have been one of the platoon commanders. massie Posted 28 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 28 September , 2005 Oh good - and it is the same signature most entries. Are there any other ways of confirming which company he was in? Thanks Andrea
